K.J. Makes Cut at Advil Western Open
July 6, 2001

After two rounds, K.J. found himself at 2-under par and tied for 40th on Friday, which placed him comfortably above the cut line at -1. He has made the cut here at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club for the second year in a row.
K.J.'s first round on Thursday was less than stellar with five birdies and four bogeys but it was still good enough to finish 1-under. He blamed it on poor course management and 55.6% Greens in Regulation.
But Choi held firm during the 2nd round, making two birdies and one bogey. His 80% GIR, along with his steady putting, kept him away from danger of missing the cut.
At one point on the 17th hole, K.J. hit his tee shot into the left fairway bunker, leaving him with a difficult sandshot from about 120 yards to the pin with sandtraps surrounding the green. Feeling confident K.J. attacked the pin leaving him with around an 8-foot putt which he ended up making a good par.
On the 18th hole, K.J. ripped his tee shot down the middle. And with only about 185 yards to the pin, he used his 6-iron to work the ball over the pin to the top slope of the green and beautifully funneled it down to about 2 feet left of the hole for his birdie.
K.J.'s playing partner, Jean Van De Velde, scrambled most of the day in the 2nd round but made a crucial 6-footer on the 18th hole to get to 1-under par after two rounds to make the cut.
